How to Change Ball Joints On a Volkswagen

Often times ball joints go on cars. This happens more often than not when the roads you drive are bumpy and gravel. Sometimes an automobile owner can tell when a part such as a ball joint is deffective. If not, mechanics can inspect a vehicle and tell you that there is a problem. Instead of having the mechanic work on your vehicle, you can opt to do it yourself. This saves time and lets you understand more of how your car functions. Volkswagen have one of the easier ball joints to replace. Why not try it yourself? Make sure to always use German parts for your vehicle.

Things You'll Need:

    * 17mm lug wrench to take wheels off
    * a jack stand or two
    * a lifting jack
    * 17mm box wrench
    * 10mm socket, 3/8" drive with ratchet
    * various 3/8" and 1/2" drive extensions.
    * Flat screwdriver
    * 13mm box wrench
    * 13mm socke, 3/8" drive
    * 22 oz hammer or bigger
    * Ball Joint fork

Instructions

1
Bring your vehicle to a location that is flat and dry. A garage works well but if there is no garage, a driveway can suffice. When the vehicle is level, go ahead and loosen the lug nuts for the front wheels. Do not remove them, just loosen them. If the vehicle is in the air and you have forgot this step, the vehicle must be lowered to complete this.

2
Once the lug nuts are loose, put a wooden block behind the rear wheel. If you are confident that your emergency brake works well, you can opt for this. I like to block the rear wheel, and also apply the emergency brake.

3
Start by lifting up the vehicle with the lifting jack. Put the lifting jack under a lift point or the frame of your vehicle. When the vehicle is off the ground, then apply a jack stand so ensure safety.

4
Go ahead and remove the wheel. Once the wheel is removed you have plenty of room to work. After replacing ball joints, an alignment will be needed. There is no need to worry about getting the adjustment perfect when reinstalling parts. With that being said, go ahead and remove the three set bolts that hold the ball joint to the lower A arm. These bolts come in a number of sizes depending if they are original or aftermarket. They are either 13mm or 10mm heads. These bolts are where the adjustment is when the vehicle is aligned.

5
When the three set bolts are removed, proceed with removing the pinch bolt that holds the top of the ball joint in place. The bolt should be 17mm. You will need a wrench on the other side of the bolt to hold the nut. Also, apply a socket to the other side of the bolt using various extensions with your ratchet.

6
When the pinch bolt is removed, then the ball joint can be removed. The best way to remove the ball joint is with a ball joint fork. These can be used with hammers to remove the ball joint. If this is not available, a screwdriver and a hammer work well. Watch your fingers!

7
Installation is reverse of removal. Remember to get your vehicle aligned or you will have some worn tires in no time.
